seem to be obsessed with cleanliness, making sure that everything is sterilised and being very weary in public places. Living your life like this will probably help you avoid some bugs, but you will probably be very stressed and miserable! On the other hand if people are slap-dash about cleanliness in times of potential outbreaks of disease (e.g. swine flu outbreak, or infections in hospitals) this can be very dangerous. So, I think most people are generally pretty sensible about microbes, knowing that good practice is required to stave off illness but not going too overboard.
You are dead right that some microbes are very good for us and our lives (e.g.in bacteria important in making cheese and yoghurt, bacteria in our guts in helping us digest food). Often when people say ‘microbe’ people automatically think ‘bad’. But, you are right, this isn’t always the case!
