Winning will help the local community to understand more about blood and diseases in The Gambia and so will help them know what to do if they get symptoms of diseases.

To do actual scientific research to try and find cures for diseases tat is going to make a massive difference to the world is very, very expensive. For example, the project I am working on at the moment is going to cost around £500,000 over 3 years! So, I can’t claim that the £500 prize is going to be used to try and improve every day living by getting new cures for disease….

What I will use the money for is to help fund an event that gets kids from underpriveleged local schools come to our University to learn about the research we do and how cool scientific research is (to hopefully stimulate them to keep studying science at school, and maybe even consider it as a future job). So, on that level, we will help improve the everyday lives of these kids, in the sort term (by giving them a really enjoyable day) and long term (keeping them interested in science to help their studies).

      Hi,

I don’t think it will improve every day living but it will make a couple of my students very happy indeed for a day or two.
      🙂

It will help a small group of children experience doing real science they otherwise might not get to do. Hopefully they will enjoy the experience and be interested in science for the rest of their lives, so they can appreciate the benefits science brings and understand scientific issues they come across everyday. With any luck, as with you guys, one or two may become scientists themselves. 🙂

to be honest not for many people..I think 2 students will be really chuffed to be able to go to a conference and schoold studnets will get a better chance to do outreach..so alot of people…something that might click with them and encourage them to follow a science career..if thats what they want
