There are a lot of drugs available at the moment that do a good job of dealing with HIV and helping people with HIV live a lot longer. These are all anti-retroviral drugs (HIV is a retrovirus) and different kinds are often taken in combination to attack the virus in different ways.
But, the ultimate breakthrough will be to get a vaccine that protects people from HIV infection in the first place. There are no such vaccines available at the moment, but people are working very hard to develop one. I really can’t say exactly when a good vaccine will developed, but hopefully sometime in the not so distant future there will be some big breakthroughs.
