• Question: How long would it take of listening to music above the 'safe' volume would it take to damage your hearing? Can you prevent it in other ways than turning the volume lower?

It would depend on your ears but there is no way of knowing how much your ears would take so turn it down. You could prevent it by wearing ear muffs!

Turning the volume down on a MP3 player or iPod is by far the best way of saving your hearing. It also stops you annoying other people around you.
If you listen to music loud enough to cause your hearing to be a bit dull afterwards, that is the first sign you are causing damage. It can be a very few minutes. Keep doing that over days, weeks, months or years and it will become permanent.

I am not sure of the time scale- would depend on exactly what volume and type of music you listened to I guess. Don’t think there is really any good way of preventing hearing damage due to loud noise other than reducing the exposure to noise.

Not very long to cause a small damage initially and then the problem becomes worse with more time. I once went to a concert with my younger daughter and the music was so loud that when I came out of the concert my ears were buzzing for a couple of hours after that.

it would depend how much above safe you were listening…the louder the sound the more damage likely to be done
