Yes whooping cough is transmitted by small droplets of the bacteria during coughing. It can last many weeks and it can be hard to breath giving the ‘whooping’ sound. Children are given the vaccine against pertussis (whooping cough) as a combined vaccine with diptheria, hib, tetanus and polio at two months of age with several booster later on.
