We are only allowed to use the money for science communication. See my profile for the answer to this question!

We have to use the money for communicating science to the general public.

My idea is to use the money to help smaller primary schools with limited resources, probably the Year 6 class, to have a try at doing a simple science experiment they otherwise may not be able to do. The money would go towards funding ‘resource boxes’ containing all the basic equipment needed to carry out a simple science experiment. A small group of schools could borrow the boxes and perform the experiment, pooling their results online where everyone involved could access and analyse them i.e. more data improves accuracy. I would hope to persuade other scientists at my university to volunteer to help with the experiments in the schools, and communicate with the children about what it’s like to be a scientist.

No, I would use it to help fund an event to get local underpriveleged school kids to our University so they can experience first-hand what scientific research is and hopefully encorage them to keep studying science in the future.

The money has to go to the promotion of science. That’s the rule of the competition. I will give it to 2 of my students to attend a scientific conference in Sheffield this coming September.

well i’d expand my work in outreach so more students could see how research is done over a longer period

and expand the opportunities for undergrads to learn about research by going to a conference
